DDI Student diving programs

Try Scuba Diving

The try scuba diving program is designed to allow individuals the experience of being under water while able to breathe. The primary goal of the program is to give a safe, positive and enjoyable experience.

Pool Diver

The DDI Pool Diver course provides candidates with the necessary knowledge and skills required to dive safely in a confined water environment.

Candidates are required to complete all sections of the academic and confined water training of an Open Water Diver course. Certification and added safety measures stated on the individual’s certification card are similar to those of an Open Water Diver.

Scuba Diver

The DDI Scuba Diver course provides candidates with the necessary knowledge and skills required to dive safely in an open water environment under direct supervision of a Dive Leader or scuba instructor.

DDI Scuba Divers are qualified to dive within the following parameters:

  • dive to a recommended maximum depth of 12 m
  • dive in groups of up to four level 1 scuba divers per dive leader,
  • make dives which do not require in‐water decompression stops,
  • dive only when appropriate support is available at the surface,
  • dive under conditions that are equal or better than the conditions where they were trained.

NOTE: If accompanied by a scuba instructor, an DDI Scuba Diver may gain progressive experience beyond these parameters and develop competency in managing more challenging diving conditions designed to lead to higher qualifications. Where further instruction is required this can only be provided by a suitably qualified scuba instructor.

Where only further experience is required, this may be supervised by a dive leader.

Open Water Diver

The DDI Open Water Diver course provides candidates with the necessary knowledge and skills required to dive safely in an open water environment with other divers of at least the same level of certification. Because of the wide variety of disabilities that one may encounter when training disabled divers and as all training is performance based, achievement of all, or part of the required objectives will determine the added safety measures that will be required of the individual.

Open Water Divers are qualified to dive within the following parameters unless they have additional training or are accompanied by a dive leader:

  • dive to a recommended maximum depth of 15 m with other scuba divers of the same level,
  • make dives, which do not require in‐water decompression stops,
  • dive only when appropriate support (e.g. first aid kit, a dive leader, support vessel; as appropriate to the    divesite and the divers’ experience) is available at the surface,
  • dive under conditions that are equal or better than the conditions where they were trained.

NOTE If diving conditions are significantly different from those previously experienced, an Open Water Diver requires an appropriate orientation from a dive leader.

Where further instruction is required this can only be provided by a suitably qualified scuba instructor. If accompanied by a scuba instructor, an Open Water Diver may gain progressive experience beyond these parameters and develop competency in managing more challenging diving conditions (e.g. increased depth and current, reduced visibility, extreme temperatures) designed to lead to higher qualifications.

Advanced Open Water Diver

The DDI Advanced Open Water diver provides a novice diver with a structured, well‐supervised means of gaining additional diving experience. By participating in various tasks the novice divers gains a broader awareness of the underwater environment, thus improving the individual’s diving capabilities. To become certified as an DDI Advanced Open Water Diver, the individual must complete a minimum of five elective dives. Based upon the individual’s ability to complete the exercises required for each of the dives will determine the added safety measures that will be stated on his or her certification card.

Crossover Certification

The purpose of the DDI Crossover Certification is to allow certification of individuals who was previously certified as a diver and for any reason became disabled. This allows the individual to regain a diving certification without having to complete an entire diving training program. The person still has to be evaluated and if necessary re‐trained by a DDI instructor for any needed areas and skills, the performance and ability of the person will determine the level of certification that the instructor will issue, using existing guidelines for the relevant programs, including but not limited to assistance requirement levels.

The crossover program is available for the current training programs and their recognized equal certifications.
